Aulus Cornelius Celsus and his contribution to the history of medicine
Drahomíra Tesařová
The monograph is dedicated to the personality of Aulus Cornelius Celso and his writings De medicina. It provides an analysis of the writings from various perspectives, thus expanding our knowledge of the work. It characterises the personality of Aulus Cornelius Celsus and his writings, illustrates the author's attitude towards the views of the medical schools, which also influenced the attitude of physicians in ancient Rome, and discusses topics in which Celsus contributed to the emergence of new fields and new methods of treatment, such as lifestyle issues and the therapeutic method of hydrotherapy. In several other chapters, the thesis examines the contribution of Aulus Cornelius Celsus to the creation of Latin medical terminology, which has retained its vitality throughout the centuries. It describes the origin of medical terms by metaphorical and metonymic transfer of meanings, the adoption of words from foreign languages, especially from Greek, and their functioning in Latin, characterizes multi-word naming units (collocational terms), and compares ancient Latin medical terminology with modern and Czech medical terminology.
The work thus provides a comprehensive view of the personality and work of Aulus Cornelius Celsus and the origin of Latin medical terminology. It is intended for historians of medicine and individual medical disciplines, linguists and all those interested in the history of medicine in antiquity.
PhDr. Drahomíra Tesařová-Nováková, CSc., a classical philologist, focuses her professional work on the history of medicine in ancient antiquity and Latin linguistics.
