Psychosomatic Medicine 2022 - Where psychosomatics and psychotherapy intersect?

For the second time the University of Physical Education and Sport PALESTRA together with the Society of Psychosomatic Medicine ČLS JEP publishes a collective monograph Psychosomatic Medicine.

This collective monograph deals with current issues of psychosomatic medicine with emphasis on therapeutic procedures and the importance of psychotherapy in the treatment of psychosomatic patients. This is related to the question of competence, i.e. who is entitled to carry out targeted psychotherapy in practice, and also to the question of what is the position of psychotherapy in the treatment of psychosomatic patients, whether it must always be indicated and, if so, what are the criteria for its indication. Many of the methods discussed in the text of the book act holistically, i.e. on all components of the bio-psycho-social system of the individual, including the psyche; they are not primarily psychotherapeutic methods, yet they can be very effective in the treatment of psychosomatic patients. This includes a number of physiotherapeutic techniques and methods, which are given special attention in this publication. We can therefore conclude that in the treatment of psychosomatic patients, a number of methods are applied by experts from several disciplines, which operate at different levels. They usually also act on the psyche of the patients. Therefore, they also have a psychotherapeutic effect as part of a holistic action, and they do not have to be targeted indicated psychotherapy. However, this requires therapists to be erudite in this area, which is why we emphasise the inclusion of psychosomatics in the training of all health professions. Conversely, an erudite psychotherapist should have a good understanding of the mechanisms of psychosomatic relationships in order to be effective in this area. The treatment of psychosomatic patients can also be seen as "tuning up" all layers of the personality, including the spiritual one, and this topic is also addressed in the publication.
