Research on sleep quality and sleep preferences in artistic gymnasts (male and female) aged 14-20 years in relation to balance performance

Thesis supervisor: prof. PaedDr. Milada Krejčí, CSc.

Abstract

The thesis is part of the international project W/VSP/161/I - Basic research on circadian determinants of lifestyle and performance of Japanese and Czech athletes and non-athletes, which are determinants of performance in sport, studies and professional life, conducted at the Palestra University of Physical Education and Sport. The aim of this thesis was to analyze the sleep quality and sleep preferences of athletic gymnasts (male and female) aged 14-20 years in relation to balance performance. The research investigation was conducted in a quantitative qualitative research design. The quantitative part was aimed at finding out the life rhythms and sleep patterns by using a questionnaire survey (Nakade, Takeuchi, Krejci et. al 2015). The qualitative part of the research was focused on balance test, where 3 balance tests were used, covering both static and dynamic balance. The research investigation involved 30 top level gymnasts who were tested in 4 gymnastics clubs in Prague. The results of the statistical correlation showed that based on the test results it cannot be claimed that there is any correlation between M-E scores and BMI. On the contrary, there is a significant positive correlation between M-E score values and falling asleep based on the test results. Furthermore, the comparison between the M-E score and the M-Z score did not show a significant correlation. Finally, a comparison between M-E score and balance was made, which also did not confirm a significant correlation. Certain differences in responses to questions from the life rhythms and sleep questionnaire were demonstrated through graphical representations.

Vliv výšky na výkon v chůzi / Effect of height on walking performace

Supervisor: prof. MUDr. Martin Matoulek, Ph.D.

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to compare the relationship between walking performance and selected physical parameters in top female walkers and in patients of an obesity ward. The sub-tasks of this work were the development of guidelines for a six-minute walking test and its implementation by a group of patients. In this group, body composition measurements were performed using the In Body bioimpedance method. The following parameters were used in the study: height, total weight, adipose tissue, BMI and age. Their influence on the result of the walking test, i.e. distance walked, was investigated. The data concerning the patient group and the group of top female walkers were evaluated using Statistica CZ 12 software. Descriptive statistics of both sets and correlation matrices of the investigated dependencies were also prepared in this program. The results and individual values were expressed in numbers and further displayed in tables and graphs for better visualization. Statistically significant correlations were found in relation to age (p=0.024), BMI (p=0.028) and fat mass (p=0.004) in the group of patients. The following parameters were worked with in the top female walkers: height, total weight, BMI and age. A statistically significant correlation was found for height (p=0.006) and walking performance, i.e. the final time in the 20km race walk. The research hypothesis of the impact of height on performance was confirmed only for the group of female athletes. The results showed that height probably plays a role as a means of better performance in this study group. In the obese study group, BMI and body fat percentage are more crucial than height and therefore the research assumption that height can influence the outcome of the 6MWT could not be proven.

Abstract

The aim of the thesis was to compare the relationship between walking performace and selected physical parameters of elite female race walkers and in patients of the obesitology department. The partial tasks of this work were the preparation of methodological instructions for the six-minute walking test and its execution by a group of patients. For this group, body composition was measured using the bioimpedance method "In Body". The following parameters were used in the study: height, total weight, body fat, BMI and age. Their influece on the result of the walking test i.e., the distance traveled, was further examined. Data regarding group of patients as well as group of athletes were evaluated using the Statictica CZ 12 program. Descriptive statistics of both sets and correlation matrices of investigated dependencies were also processed in this program. The results and individual values were expressed in numbers and further displayed in tables and graphs for better visualization. In the group of patients, statistically significant correlations were found in connection with age (p=0,024), BMI (p=0,028) and body fat (p=0,004). The following parameters were used for elite female walkers: height, total weight, BMI and age. A statistically significant correlation was found for height (p=0,006) and walking performace i.e., the final time in 20 km walking race. The research assupmtion of impact of height on performance was confirmed only in the group of female athletes. From the results found, it appeared that it propably plays a role important to achieve a better result for this researched group. In the examined group of patients with obesity, the value from BMI and the amount of body fat is much more relevant than height, and the research assumption that height can influence the result of 6MWT could not be proven.

Thesis supervisor: doc. PhDr. Pavel Tilinger, CSc.

Abstract

The aim of the bachelor's thesis was to determine to what extent the inclusion of rebounding exercises in off-ice training will improve the speed abilities of U15 ice hockey players. For this purpose, a test battery and a training program were created, the main content of which was plyometric exercises. The sub-tasks of the thesis consist of a study of the literature on ice hockey and the development of speed skills, a 12-week training intervention, a test battery including three standardized on-ice tests and an evaluation of these results. Using basic statistical methods of interviewing, testing, consisting of input, control and output measurements of players' speed abilities, and conducting off-ice training units, we obtained all necessary information and data. The results section focuses on the evaluation of the questionnaire survey and individual tests. For comparison, similar studies by other authors are also presented in the paper. There was an improvement in speed skills for all players and on average the intervention had a greater effect on defenders than forwards. Thus, the work can serve as inspiration for coaches who want to incorporate rebounding exercises into off-ice training.

Vliv práce z domova na vyváženost pracovního a osobního života (v oborech kancelářských prácí) / The effect of home office on work-life balance (in the fields of office works)

Thesis supervisor: doc. PhDr. Markéta Švamberk Šauerová, Ph.D.

Abstract

The aim of this thesis was to find out whether home office or working from home is a work benefit for employees. Related to this, the questions answered here were whether work or personal life is prioritized in the home office and whether work duties take more or less time in the home office than in the workplace.

The theoretical part described the basics of this issue and the view of various authors on defining the concepts related to this topic. Previous studies related to the topic were also traced. In the practical part, the obtained data were analyzed and evaluated.

For the purposes of the theoretical part of the thesis, a content analysis of Czech and foreign language literary sources was carried out. In the practical part, a questionnaire was designed and the basis for semi-structured interviews was prepared. The sample of respondents was selected on the basis of availability with the exclusion of people with no experience of working from home and the requirement that they should be employees in the field of office work. Thus, the diagnostic methods were a questionnaire and personal interviews. The data obtained were processed using statistical methods and compared with previous research.

The data shows that most employees consider the home office an important benefit. Respondents are not inclined to prioritize work or personal life when working from home and work responsibilities take up a comparable amount of time when working from home as when working from the office.

Occurrence of Burnout Syndrome of Medical Personnel in Emergency Care in Relation to their Lifestyle

Thesis supervisor: doc. PhDr. Daniela Stackeová, Ph.D.

Abstract

The thesis focuses on burnout syndrome in emergency care workers in relation to their lifestyle.

The aim of this study was to map the burnout syndrome in emergency care workers and to analyze its possible relationship to their lifestyle. In the sub-objectives we focused on the extent of burnout syndrome in healthcare workers, ways of stress abreaction or mapping psychosomatic manifestations of burnout syndrome.

In this thesis we conduct a research investigation using quantitative and qualitative methods. In the quantitative research, we used the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure (SMBM) questionnaire to measure the level of burnout in three levels (physical, cognitive, emotional). 171 respondents participated in the quantitative research. The qualitative research was conducted by creating a semi-structured interview using interpretative phenomenological analysis where 10 respondents participated in the research. The respondents were health care professionals working at Motol University Hospital in the emergency departments of children and adults, anaesthesiology and resuscitation department of adults and two emergency services of ZZS SČK and ZZS HMP.

The resulting findings in the quantitative research showed high reliability values of the SMBM questionnaire by calculating Crombach's alpha coefficient. For all burnout items (physical, cognitive, emotional), Crombach's alpha was 0.94. Furthermore, the questionnaire survey revealed that out of 171 respondents, 32 individuals are affected by burnout syndrome, i.e. 18.7 % of the total number of respondents. Of these 32 respondents, the most affected by burnout syndrome, by occupation, were paramedics, these were 15 individuals, i.e. 46.9 %. Most of those affected by burnout syndrome were (by place of work) in paediatric emergency admission, these were 14 respondents, i.e. 43.8 %. According to education, the most individuals affected by burnout syndrome were those with higher education, there were 19 respondents, i.e. 59.4 % individuals. By length of experience, the highest number of individuals affected by burnout syndrome was over 10 years, these were 11 respondents i.e. 34.4 % out of a total of 32 affected respondents.

After assessing the individual subscales, it was then determined how many respondents are affected by burnout syndrome on a physical, cognitive and emotional level. In the physical plane, 64 respondents were affected by burnout syndrome, which amounted to 37.4 %, in the cognitive plane 21 respondents, which amounted to 12.3 % and in the emotional plane 49 respondents, which amounted to 28.7 % out of a total of 171 respondents.

The resulting findings in the qualitative research showed the respondents' subjective views of their lifestyle and the connection between burnout syndrome and their lifestyle. The association was found mainly in unhealthy habits, disruption of circadian rhythms, irregular diet, psychosomatic difficulties or insufficient rest and prevention of burnout syndrome.

Influence of the Spiral Stabilization of the Spine (SPS)

Thesis supervisor: Mgr. Mgr. Eva Nechlebová, Ph.D.

Abstract

This bachelor thesis is developed to analyse the effect of the SPS method on the musculoskeletal system and the most common related disorders such as disc prolapse, mal posture and scoliosis. The method uses muscle chains to stabilize and regenerate the musculoskeletal system.

The theoretical part describes the anatomy and kinesiology of the spine. In the next part, the concept of disc prolapse, scoliosis and faulty posture is explained. The following chapter focuses on the Spiral Spinal Stabilization method, namely its general laws, principles, main spiral chains, etc.

The qualitative research method was chosen for the practical part. The selection of a group of 21 probands, 7 with disc prolapse, 7 children with VDT and 7 children with scoliosis was carried out from my practice in Ústí nad Labem, data collection was carried out in the form of an interview, questionnaire, measurements, aspecation and palpation and measurement of extensions in the hip according to MUDr. Smisek. Parents of the respondents were also asked to fill in an informed consent form.

Data processing was done by qualitative assessment method, qualitative analysis of pre- and post-exercise questionnaire, comparison of pre- and post-exercise questionnaire, comparison of pre- and post-exercise photographs and radiographs.

Adults attended individual exercise sessions once every four weeks for 8 months, exercising at home at least once a day, children with scoliosis attended group exercise once a week and practiced with their parents at home every day. Consultations took place once a month. Children with VDTs attended group exercise once a week and did home exercise every day for at least 15 min per day. The investigation was conducted from mid-September to the end of March, and for scoliosis from September 2021.

In disc prolapse, all probands experienced resolution of pain after 8 months of exercise. In the probands with VDT, muscle imbalances were corrected after 8 months, and all scoliosis patients did not experience curve deterioration due to proper SPS and manual techniques of M.D. Smisek, with 5 out of 7 children showing curve improvement of 10 or more °Cobbs.

In conclusion, it is evident that exercise under expert guidance with precise exercise processing and supported by special manual techniques is very effective even in older children with curves that were indicated for surgery and massive prolapse over 1 cm.

Abstract

This bachelor thesis is prepared to analyze the influence of the SPS method on the musculoskeletal system and the most common disorders related to it, such as disc herniation, poor posture and scoliosis. The method uses muscle chains to stabilization and regeneration the musculoskeletal system. Back pain is one of the significant factors affecting work ability and overall quality of life. In adults, it is mainly due to the degeneration of the intervertebral disc (its herniation), in children due to the non[1]physiological curvature of the spine, thanks to the computer age, which attracts a sedentary lifestyle with overuse of mobile phones and playing computer games. Lack of healthy movement, which creates a natural muscle corset, then leads to muscle imbalances affecting the spine. The theoretical part describes the anatomy and kinesiology of the spine. The next part explains the concept of herniated disc, scoliosis and poor posture. The following chapter is focused on the method of spiral stabilization of the spine, namely on its general patterns, principles, main spiral chains, etc. For the practical part, the method of qualitative research was chosen. The selection of a set of 21 probands, of which 7 with herniated disc, 7 children with VDT and 7 children with scoliosis was made from my practice in Ústí nad Labem, data collection took place in the form of interviews, questionnaires, measurements, asspection and palpation and measurement of extensions in the hip girdle according to MUDr. Respondents' parents were also asked to complete informed consent. Data processing was carried out by the method of qualitative evaluation, qualitative analysis before and after exercise, comparison of questionnaire before and after exercise, comparison of photographs and X-ray before and after exercise. Adults attended individual exercises 1x in three weeks for 6 months, at home they exercised at least once a day, children with scoliosis attended group exercise 1x a week and with their parents they exercised at home every day. Consultations took place 1x a month. Children with VDT attended group exercises 1x a week, home exercises performed every day for 15 minutes a day. The investigation took place from mid-September to the end of March, in scoliosis from September 2021. In the case of disc herniation, pain was eliminated in all probands after 8 months of exercise. In the probands with VDT, muscle imbalances were corrected after 8 months, and all scoliosis did not occur due to proper exercise using the SPS method and manual techniques of Dr. Smíšek to worsen the curve, with 5 of 7 children having curves improve by 10 or more °Cobb. In the case of disc herniation, all probands had their pain removed after 8 months of exercise. In probands with VDT, muscle imbalances were corrected after 8 months and in all scoliosis, the curve improved due to proper exercise using the SPS method and manual techniques In conclusion, exercise under professional guidance with precise processing of exercises and supported by special manual techniques is very effective even in older children with curves, which were indicated for surgery and massive prolapses over 1 cm.

Výzkum kvality spánku, cirkadiánních preferencí a testů balancehy v porovnání profesionálních fotbalistů a běžné populace mužů stejného věku / An investigation of sleep quality, circadian preferences and balance tests in a comparison of professional footballers and a general population of men of the same age

Thesis supervisor: doc. PaedDr. Milada Krejčí, CSc.

Abstract

The bachelor thesis was prepared within the research project W/VSP/161/I "Basic research on circadian determinants of lifestyle and performance in Japanese and Czech athletes and non-athletes" at the University of Physical Education and Sport PALESTRA. The aim was to analyze the quality of sleep, circadian preferences and balance tests in a comparison of professional football players and a general population of men of the same age, and then to make a comparison of the findings. The study involved 2 groups: the F-20 group of professional football players playing in the highest Czech competition (mean age 24.8 years) and the B-20 group of men from the general population (mean age 25.6 years). The following methods were used: content analysis of literary sources, life rhythms and sleep questionnaire, anthropological examination, InBody physical diagnosis and battery of functional balance tests. The following calculations were used in descriptive statistics: mean, standard deviation, median, absolute and relative frequency. Hypotheses were tested using the Mann-Whitney test and the test of independence based on Spearman's correlation coefficient using the TIBCO STATISTICA 13 software. The analysis of the results showed statistically significantly higher equilibrium test scores for group F than for group B. The prevalence of drinking more than 10 drinks of alcohol from Friday to Sunday was higher in group B. Compared to File F, File B woke up statistically significantly earlier on weekdays and went to bed statistically significantly later on days off. Impaired mental health was found in 10 % of Set B. In both files F and B, a circadian typology of morning-type tendencies was found to be predominant. The results can be used as feedback for players and the general public and can be widely used in the practice of fitness professionals.

Analýza kariéry Stanislava Kozubka v silniční cyklistice / Analysis of Stanislav Kozubek's career in road cycling

Thesis supervisor: doc. PhDr. Pavel Tilinger, CSc.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find the factors that influenced the dynamics of sport performance in the second part of the author's sport career, in which he was involved in road cycling from 2006 to 2013.

As part of the research assumptions, the author analyzed selected studies on the evaluation of sports careers of successful athletes. Based on the results, where in addition the author reflected his many years of experience, it was found that the most common influences on performance development can be found in the areas of fitness (training and racing load), health, psyche and technique.

Subsequently, a personal case study and retrospective longitudinal mixed-methods research were conducted. In its quantitative part, training records, stress testing and race results were analysed. The qualitative research included an analysis of training diaries including the author's self-reflection.

In the area of fitness, performance no longer grows with a mere increase in racing kilometres, as it did in the first part of the author's career, which he analysed in his bachelor thesis. It is true that stage races have a greater effect on performance than one-off races, and the most important factor in general is the inclusion of the first races already in the pre-race period. In terms of health, injuries had negative and long-term effects on performance, and illnesses only when the author was out of sporting shape. In the mental area, motivation helped fitness growth after the transfer to a new team with high competition, while it also had a negative effect when the transfer to professionals abroad did not work out. These findings, specifically in the area of fitness, need to be taken in the context of the author's twenty-year professional career.

Abstract

The objective of this work was to discover factors that affected the sports performance dynamics in the second part of the author's sports career, which he devoted to road cycling in the years 2006-2013.

Within the research assumptions, the author executed analysis of selected studies that deal with evaluation of successful athletes' sports careers. Based on these results and employing the author's multiple years of experience, it was revealed that the most frequent influencing areas that interfere in performance development can be found in the field of fitness (both training and competition loads), health, psychology, and techniques.

Subsequently, a personal case study and retrospective longitudinal mixed research were elaborated. In this quantitative part, an analysis of training reports was carried out as well as stress testing and race results were scrutinized. Qualitative research then focused on training records analysis, involving the author's self-reflection.

In terms of fitness, the performance no longer increases with mere intensification in raced distance as it used to be in the first period of the author's career, which was analysed in own bachelor's thesis before. It is a fact that stage races provide greater effect on performance than single round races, and most importantly the inclusion of the preliminary races period is the most significant factor. In the field of health, the very negative and long-term impacts on performance were injuries. Diseases, on the other hand, interfered only when the author's sports form was in decline.

In the field of psychology, fitness allowed to foster motivation after transferring to a new highly competitive team, yet, it also created negative effect when joining professionals abroad had failed. These results, specifically in the field of fitness, need to be taken in the context of the author's twenty-year professional career.

The relationship between physical activity, susceptibility to stress and self-efficacy in students

Thesis supervisor: doc. PhDr. Markéta Švamberk Šauerová, Ph.D.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between physical activity, stress proneness and general self-efficacy in students of Palestra University of Technology. The main objective is to find out whether there is a relationship between physical activity and stress proneness in students. The sub-objectives of the study are to observe the differences in stress susceptibility in 4 levels (emotional, cognitive, physical, social) in students with higher/lower physical activity. Furthermore, to determine whether students with higher levels of physical activity also show higher levels of general self-efficacy, and to simultaneously observe differences in stress susceptibility and general self-efficacy by types of regular physical activity. Quantitative standardized questionnaires such as the J. and T. Toshner Burnout Syndrome Manifestation Inventory, the General Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, and the Wellness Inventory are used to collect data. The results show that when the overall data is taken into account, there is a statistically significant negative linear relationship between physical activity and stress susceptibility in students. The data further show a positive linear relationship between physical activity and general self-efficacy. If students regularly engage in a sport/movement activity, there is no statistically significant relationship between the type of activity regularly performed and stress susceptibility, and the same result is shown when comparing the type of movement activity and general self-efficacy. Although this is only a correlation and not causation, it is likely that different types of physical activity can be applied regularly to reduce stress susceptibility and increase general self-efficacy, provided that enough activity is included. This thesis was carried out within the framework of the Internal Project P/VSP/221/N - The use of Workplace Wellness in promoting the health and mental well-being of employees, taking into account the impact of Covid 19.

Abstract

The aim of the thesis is to investigate the relationship between physical activity, stress susceptibility, and general self-efficacy among students of VŠTVS Palestra. The main objective is to determine whether there is a relationship between physical activity and stress susceptibility among students. The sub-objectives are to observe differences in stress susceptibility among students with higher/lower levels of physical activity in four areas (emotional, cognitive, physical, social) and to investigate whether students with higher levels of physical activity also exhibit higher levels of general self-efficacy, while monitoring differences in stress susceptibility and general self-efficacy according to the type of regularly performed physical activity. For data collecting are used Burnout Inventory, General Self-Efficacy Scale and Wellness Inventory. The results show that, when considering the overall data, there is a statistically significant negative linear relationship between physical activity and stress susceptibility among students. The data also show a positive linear relationship between physical activity and general self-efficacy. However, in case when students are regularly engaged in a particular sport, there is no statistically significant relationship between the type of regularly performed activity and stress susceptibility, and the same result is observed when comparing the type of physical activity and general self-efficacy. Although this is only a correlation, not causality, it is likely that various types of physical activity can be regularly applied to reduce stress susceptibility and increase general self-efficacy if the activity is included in sufficient amounts. The thesis was carried out as part of the Internal project P/VSP/221/N - Utilization of Workplace Wellness in Supporting the Health and Mental Well-being of Employees with Consideration of the Impact of Covid 19.

Vliv karbonové boty na dynamiiku oporové fáze při vytrvalostním běhu / The effect of carbon plate shoes on the stance phase dynamics during endurance running

Thesis supervisor: Mgr. Mgr. Roman Čedík

Abstract

The bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of the values of dynamic and biomechanical parameters during the resistive phase measured during running activities of probands, using standard running shoes and running shoes with carbon plate. The thesis presents theoretical knowledge in the field of running and its subfields. The aim of the thesis was, to assess the effect of carbon running shoes on running dynamics, docking dynamics and biomechanics of running during the resistance phase based on laboratory measurements. To achieve this, selected biomechanical parameters were measured in the experimental part using video analysis, dynamic plantography (Pedar) and accelerometry (RunScribe). When comparing the measured values, significant differences were found for different types of running shoes in the distribution of plantar pressure, in the time interval of the resistive phase and in the instability of the ankle joint when using running shoes with a carbon plate. The differences found are so significant that they may significantly affect both running and docking dynamics and overall running biomechanics. In an athlete with a lower level of fitness, this could subsequently lead to overloading of the musculoskeletal system and a higher risk of injury.

Abstract

The bachelor's thesis focuses on comparing the values of dynamic and biomechanical parameters measured during the stance phase of running activities of the subjects, using standard running shoes and running shoes with a carbon plate. The thesis provides theoretical knowledge in the field of running and its individual areas. The aim of the thesis was to assess, based on laboratory measurements, the influence of carbon running shoes on running dynamics, step dynamics, and running biomechanics during the stance phase. Selected biomechanical parameters were measured in the experimental part using video analysis, dynamic plantography (Pedar), and accelerometry (RunScribe). When comparing the measured values, significant differences in plantar pressure distribution, the duration of the stance phase, and ankle joint instability were found for different types of running shoes when using running shoes with a carbon plate. These differences are so significant that they can significantly affect both running dynamics and step dynamics, as well as overall running biomechanics. For an athlete with lower levels of fitness, this could subsequently lead to overloading of the musculoskeletal system and a higher risk of injury.

Vliv manuální lymfodrenáže u sportovců v rámci regenerace / The effect of manual lymphodrenage in sport regeneration

Thesis supervisor: Mgr. Mgr. Eva Nechlebová, Ph.D.

Abstract

Aims: The main aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of manual lymphatic drainage applied to the lower limbs as part of regeneration in elite athletes. The effect of the method is evaluated by tissue extensibility, goniometric measurements, lower limb circumference measurements and subjective feelings of the clients. Another aim is to compare the application of the method with classical regenerative procedures (stretching, rolling, sauna) and its inclusion in a healthy lifestyle. Hypotheses were established and subsequently tested. The work is evaluated on the basis of the application of the method on the tested group of clients.

Methods: the research work is divided into two parts. The theoretical part of the thesis deals with anatomical knowledge of lymphatic pathways, lymph and the basis of manual lymphatic drainage technique. In addition, other regenerative techniques used in sports are presented.

The practical part is treated as a quantitative research - experiment, where hypotheses were set and tested. The research included 16 athletes aged 17-20 years. The research took place in the hockey club HC Sparta Praha in the junior category. The athletes were randomly divided into two groups. Group A attended manual lymphatic drainage twice a week for four weeks, lasting 45 minutes. Group B followed the recovery routines as they are used to. At the beginning of the research, a medical history was taken from each client, and each answered the initial questions in the questionnaire, which were then processed together with the medical history. This was followed by an initial examination, which tested tissue extensibility (Janda muscle shortening), goniometry and lower limb circumferences. A four-week intervention followed. The exit examination was conducted in the same way as at entry, including exit questions that were processed into and analysis of the data and results obtained.

RESULTS: The results of the study show that manual lymphatic drainage definitely has its place in regenerative techniques. All probands who participated in the research in group A reported that they felt better after the intervention according to their subjective feelings and had no significant difficulties. Group B feels mostly the same as before the intervention. The results show that the measurement of the aforementioned data does not affect the resulting recovery of lower limb tissues in healthy people who do not have swelling.

Conclusion: based on the results, it was evaluated that the effect of manual lymphatic drainage is higher than conventional regenerative procedures in terms of subjective feelings, but the deviations are minimal in terms of measurements. For more accurate results, a longer time for the intervention would have been better and it would have been more appropriate to follow more subjects that affect the whole body setting. It is not a good idea to focus on only one recovery method, but it is advisable for athletes to combine techniques as they affect everyone differently.

Výzkum vlivu kvality spánku na hladinu testosteronu u mužů apmeklēvujících fitness centrum / Research into the effect of sleep quality on testosterone levels in men attending a fitness centre

Thesis supervisor: prof. PaedDr. Milada Krejčí, CSc.

Abstract

The thesis discusses sleep, sleep deprivation, testosterone and other steroid hormones within the field of fitness. The thesis is part of the international project W/VSP/161/I - Basic Research on Circadian Determinants of Lifestyle and Performance in Japanese and Czech Athletes and Non-Athletes that are Determinants of Performance in Sport, Study and Professional Life, conducted at the Palestra University of Physical Education and Sport. The aim of the study is to investigate how the levels of testosterone and other steroid hormones changed after sleep deprivation. The literature describes the history of sleep study, the concept of sleep in ancient cultures, its physiology, management, its different parts, as well as sleep deprivation, the definition of hormones and the concept of fitness. The practical part addresses, using a variety of methods (blood draws, questionnaire surveys, body composition measurements, sleep diaries, and others), how sleep deprivation affects testosterone and other steroid hormone levels. The blood draws showed that testosterone decreased during sleep deprivation only in the older proband group, cortisol decreased during deprivation in both age groups, and serotonin also increased in both age groups. As an additional point, 17-hydroxyprogesterone also decreased during sleep deprivation in both age groups. This thesis is intended to serve the general public as a comprehensive review that would look at the issue of sleep, sleep deprivation and the correlation with selected hormones critically, objectively and, above all, confirmed by expert sources.

Návrh a ověření dvoutýdenního rekondičního wellness program osob s mentálním postižením / Design and verification of a two-week reconditioning wellness program for people with mental disabilities

Thesis supervisor: PhDr. Zuzana Kornatovská, Ph.D., DiS.

Abstract

The theoretical part of this bachelor thesis entitled "Design and validation of a two-week wellness programme for people with intellectual disabilities" focuses on the definitions of the terms mental disability, mental retardation, classification and types of intellectual disabilities, the concept of wellness, dimensions of wellness and pillars of wellness. In the practical part I deal with the description and effects of the different activities, which were 19 in total and which were carried out within the framework of a restorative wellness programme with persons with mental disability. The aim of this bachelor thesis was to create a 14-day restorative wellness program focused on the health of persons with mental disability. Baseline and outcome testing and measurements were conducted during the restorative program. The following tests were used to test assumptions: Timed Up and Go, hand grip strength measurements, and anthropometric measurements in the lower thigh area. From the result in the first measurement in the Timed Up and Go test, we measured a mean value of 8.72 seconds. In the second measurement, a mean value of 8.52 seconds was measured. In the measurement of hand grip strength at the entry measurement, the average value was measured to be 23.52 kg and at the exit measurement 23.10 kg. In the anthropometric measurement of the lower limbs at the first measurement of the lower limb - right thigh, the average value measured was 53.71 cm. In the final measurement of the lower limb - right thigh, the mean value was 56.38 cm. At the first measurement of the lower leg - left thigh, the average value was 55,20 cm. At the final measurement of the left lower leg, the mean value was 56.67 cm. The results found and measured from the Timed Up over Go test and anthropometric measurement of the lower limbs demonstrate that the restorative wellness program had a positive effect on the health of the clients. In the measurement of hand grip strength, there was no clear evidence of a positive effect on the clients. Regular physical activity has a positive effect on people with intellectual disability.

Pohybový režim a regenerace u příslušníků Vězeňské služby České republiky / Physical Activity Schedule and Regeneration in Members of the Prison Services of the Czech Republic

Thesis supervisor: doc. PhDr. Daniela Stackeová, Ph.D.

Abstract

The aim of the thesis was to determine the types and frequency of physical activities, the level of stress, the use of active and passive regeneration in members of the Prison Service of the Czech Republic in direct service. The sub-objectives also included mapping the motivation for physical activity and the importance of physical activity for stress management.

The theoretical part, which served as a basis for the subsequent practical part, was focused on the processing of knowledge about the Prison Service, psychological care for employees, physical activity. These topics were subsequently linked to the active form of transport and lifestyle, active and passive forms of regeneration, including stress and its effect on the performance of the service.

The practical part was focused on specific forms of regeneration and physical activities of the officers during their employment and off-duty time, how they take care of their health and what is their stress level. Quantitative research was conducted in the form of a newly developed questionnaire for the purposes of this thesis and a standardized questionnaire that maps the level of stress (Czech version of the Perceived Stress Scale). A total of 94 members of the Prison Guard Department, Correctional Department, officers performing administrative activities and members of the unit under unified command in Jiřice and Mírov prisons participated in the research survey. The data were then analysed using frequency analysis and non-parametric statistical tests to determine differences between groups and correlations between the variables under study.

The survey conducted showed that the most common physical activity was going to the fitness center (26 %), in wellness pool (21 %), in active recovery aerobic exercise (38 %) and in passive recovery massage (30 %). Officers on the morning shift were more motivated to engage in physical activity for prevention and to fill leisure time than officers on shift. Those living in a marriage had greater motivation to engage in physical activity for prevention than those living alone, with a boyfriend/girlfriend, or with parents. In the context of employment, the frequency of physical activity was generally lower for members compared to the frequency of physical activity during personal time. Stress is perceived by members of the Prison Service on a daily basis (47 %) and physical activity is most commonly used to relieve it (54 %). It was also found that the higher the motivation to maintain health, the higher the motivation associated with preventative measures and vice versa. Furthermore, those who have high control over their lives and are able to be in control and face challenges have less sense of loss of control and face challenges more easily and vice versa. Finally, recommendations were made to improve the current situation related to physical activity, recovery and coping with stress.

Abstract

The main goal of this diploma thesis was to explore types and frequency of physical exercises, the stress level, and the usage of active and passive regeneration resources in the members of the prison services of the Czech Republic, who are in direct service performance. Additionally, partial goals included mapping the motivation towards exercising and the importance of exercise for stress management.

The theoretical part, which served as the background for the subsequent practical part, was focused on processing the current state of art about the Prison service, psychological care of employees and physical activity. Consequently, these topics related to active forms of transportation and lifestyle, active and passive forms of regeneration including stress and its influence on services performance.

The practical part focused on specific types of regeneration and physical activity in staff members of the prison services both during work and off-duty, how they take care of their health and what their stress level is. The quantitative research was conducted using a new questionnaire, which was developed for the purposes of this diploma thesis and a standardized questionnaire, mapping the stress level (Czech version of the Perceived stress scale). The study included a total of 94 members of the prison guard department, the punishment enforcement department, members performing administrative tasks and members of the unit under unified command in Jiřice and Mírov prisons. Data were analyzed using a frequency statistical analysis and non-parametric statistical tests to determine differences between groups and intercorrelations of the investigated variables.

The results of the data analysis revealed that the most common physical activity was fitness center (26 %), in wellness it was pool (21 %), an aerobic exercise for active regeneration (38 %) and a massage for passive regeneration (30 %). Morning shift employees were more motivated to do a physical activity for the purpose of prevention and to fill their personal free time than member on the operation shift. Married participants had a greater motivation to do a physical activity for the purpose of prevention than participants living alone, with a boyfriend/girlfriend or with parents. The frequency of physical activity among employees was generally lower at work, compared to the frequency to engage in a physical activity during personal time off. Members of the Prison Service perceived stress on daily basis (47 %) and physical activity was most often used to relieve it (54 %). Furthermore, it was found that the higher the motivation to maintain health, the higher the motivation associated with preventive measures and vice versa. Additionally, people who had higher control over life and were able to stay on top of things and face challenges had less sense of loss of control and faced challenges more easily and vice versa. In conclusion, recommendations leading to the improvement of the current situation pertaining to physical activity, regeneration and stress level were presented.

Research on sleep quality and circadian preferences in professional extra-league ice hockey players concerning the performance in balance ability

The aim of this thesis was to analyze the indices of sleep quality and circadian preferences in extra-league hockey players in relation to performance in balance. The research design takes a quantitative approach to data collection and analysis. In order to achieve the objective of the study, a survey research was conducted supplemented by a questionnaire survey. Appropriate statistical tests were performed in the data analysis to find out the relationship between circadian preferences and selected variables such as balance skills, sleep hygiene, dietary habits, mental health level etc. This statistical analysis was further supplemented with graphical visualizations. Based on the analysis, no statistically significant relationship was indicated between eating habits, mental health and performance (expressed through balance management ability) and circadian preferences. Furthermore, the results of the analysis did not show a statistically significant effect of sleep hygiene, late breakfast and skipping breakfast on circadian preferences (as expressed by M-E scores). Nonetheless, there were interesting findings in the analysis that were not in line with expectations based on the literature presented. This research could be of benefit not only to the club participating in the study, but also to other hockey clubs that may benefit from the intervention design. Equally, the results of the actual research investigation may be of use to wellness professionals, particularly those working with professional athletes.

Verification of the Effect of an Exercise Program using Walking and Diet Adjustment in Hypertension

Thesis supervisor: doc. PhDr. Daniela Stackeová, Ph.D.

Abstract

One of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular disease is lack of physical activity. Increased physical activity is therefore emphasised for the prevention and control of hypertension, particularly in sedentary overweight or obese individuals, in addition to aiming for normal blood pressure values to reduce overall cardiovascular risk. The major health organizations that address the relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, recommend aerobic physical activity of 30-60 min duration, moderate intensity, and a frequency of 5-7 times per week. The aim of the case study developed in this bachelor thesis was to verify the effect of these recommendations on the reduction of blood pressure values in hypertension. Walking was chosen as the aerobic physical activity. Our research sought to answer the question whether a proband with hypertension will experience a reduction in blood pressure when regular walking is included according to the specified conditions. In addition to the effect of physical activity, the effect of dietary modification was also investigated - therefore, the next research question was whether following the recommendations for hypertension, such as the inclusion of regular physical activity and dietary modification, would lead to a reduction in overweight and a change in body composition in the proband with hypertension.

The qualitative research in this thesis was carried out through a case study, which examined a practical and specific case - the proband was a physically inactive, overweight, 55 years old, treated hypertensive woman, whose blood pressure at entry to the program reached the values of mild hypertension even with treatment. Baseline data were resting blood pressure values measured for 7 days in the morning and evening, a two-day record of physical activity, a seven-day record of diet, diagnosis and analysis of body composition with the InBody device, and calculation of the WHR index. The proband developed a physical activity intervention program using walking for 12 weeks, a minimum of 5 times per week, at moderate intensity, with a gradual increase in daily walking time from 30 to 60 min/day. As an adjunct to the exercise intervention, she was recommended a dietary modification. At the end of the follow-up period, blood pressure values were measured in the same way, a diagnostic and body composition analysis was performed with the InBody device, and the WHR index was calculated. The intervention program was also evaluated in relation to overweight and body composition as important factors in hypertension.

After 12 weeks of the intervention programme, the mean reduction in systolic blood pressure was 6.29 mmHg in the morning and 4.86 mmHg in the evening. The average reduction in diastolic blood pressure was 4.57 mmHg in the morning and 3.14 mmHg in the evening. There was also a decrease in heart rate by an average of 4.07 beats per minute. At the same time, the intervention programme led to a reduction in body weight (by 7.2 kg), a reduction in BMI (from 27.8 to 25.5 kg/m2), a decrease in body fat percentage (by 3.9 %) and a decrease in WHR index (from 0.91 to 0.88).

The research in this paper confirmed that regular physical activity and dietary modification play an important role in the treatment of high blood pressure and verified the effectiveness of expert recommendations in hypertension. It also confirmed the positive effect of these recommendations on weight reduction and body composition. In summary, this work verified the beneficial effects of walking supported by dietary modification on the following risk factors for cardiovascular disease - high blood pressure, overweight, body fat, and central obesity. The research reached similar results to those obtained in peer-reviewed studies dealing with this issue.

Abstract

A lack of physical activity is one of the leading risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. For the prevention and control of hypertension, increased physical activity is therefore emphasized, especially with overweight or obese individuals with sedentary habits. In addition to the effort in achieving normal blood pressure values, it is also about reducing the overall cardiovascular risk. Prominent health organizations that deal with the relationship between physical activity and cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, recommend aerobic physical activity lasting 30-60 minutes, with moderate intensity and with a frequency of 5-7 times per week. The goal of the case study described in this bachelor's thesis was to verify the effect of these recommendations on reducing blood pressure values in hypertension. For this purpose, walking was chosen as an aerobic physical activity. Our research pursued to answer the question of whether a proband suffering from hypertension will experience a reduction in blood pressure when regular walking exercise is included under the specified conditions. In addition to the effect of the physical activity, also the effect of adjusting the nutritional regime was monitored - therefore, another object of the research was whether following the recommendations given to a proband with hypertension, such as including regular physical activity and adjusting the diet, will lead to excess weight reduction and a change in body composition.

Qualitative research in this work was carried out through a case study that examined a practical and concrete case - the proband was a physically inactive overweight woman, age 55, treated for hypertension, whose blood pressure at the time of entering the program reached mild hypertension values despite a treatment. The initial data were resting blood pressure values measured during a period of 7 days in the morning and evening, a two-day physical activity record, a seven-day diet record, diagnosis and analysis of body composition using the InBody device, and a calculation of the WHR index. An exercise intervention program was developed for the proband including walking exercise lasting 12 weeks, at a minimum extent of 5 times a week, with a medium intensity and a gradual increase in daily walking time from 30 to 60 min/day. In addition to the exercise intervention, she was recommended to modify her nutritional regime. At the end of the monitoring period, blood pressure values were measured in the same way, body composition was diagnosed and analysed using the InBody device, and the WHR index was calculated. The intervention program was also evaluated in relation to the excess weight and body composition, as important factors when suffering hypertension.

After 12 weeks of the intervention program, the average reduction in systolic blood pressure was 6.29 mmHg in morning values and 4.86 mmHg in evening values. The average reduction in diastolic blood pressure was 4.57 mmHg for morning values and 3.14 mmHg for evening values. There was also a decrease in heart rate by an average of 4.07 beats per minute. At the same time, the intervention program led to a reduction in body weight (by 7.2 kg), a reduction in the BMI (from 27.8 to 25.5 kg/m2), a decrease in the percentage of body fat (by 3.9 %), and a decrease in the WHR index (from 0.91 to 0.88).

The research in this thesis confirmed that regular physical activity and modification of the nutritional regime play a significant role in the treatment of high blood pressure and verified the effectiveness of professional recommendations for hypertension. It also confirmed the positive effects of these recommendations on reducing excess weight and body composition. It can be summarized that this work verified the beneficial effects of walking supported by a change in diet for these risk factors of cardiovascular diseases - high blood pressure, overweight, amount of body fat, central obesity. The research reached similar results to those achieved in professional studies dealing with this issue.

The Influence of Environmental Factors on Stress in Flight Attendants with Focus on Gender Differences

Thesis supervisor: prof. doc. PhDr. Markéta Švamberk Šauerová, Ph.D.

Abstract

The thesis deals with the influence of environmental factors on stress in cabin crew with a focus on gender differences. The review analyzes the occupation of cabin crew, basic concepts of stress and a detailed analysis of environmental factors that may cause stress in cabin crew. The theoretical section also provides an overview of the manifestations and consequences of stress, as well as options for coping with stress. The research part aimed to find out whether environmental factors cause stress in cabin crew and which ones specifically. A sub-objective was to find out whether environmental factors have different effects on stress in female and male cabin crew. For these findings, a quantitative questionnaire survey with semi-closed questions was used, which was evaluated using basic descriptive statistics methods, as well as structured open-ended interviews, which were evaluated using an inductive procedure and served more to gain a deeper understanding of the issue. A questionnaire survey was conducted with 144 respondents, 111 women and 33 men, and an interview was subsequently conducted with 6 respondents, 3 women and 3 men. Based on the findings, the set research questions were answered by stating that environmental factors cause stress in cabin crew and these factors most commonly include lack of sleep and general fatigue, misunderstandings or conflicts with passengers and irregular working hours. No significant difference was found in the effect of factors on stress between cabin crew performing work at different times. The last research question, which was related to the sub-objective, presents that women and men are generally stressed by the same groups of environmental factors, but upon deeper examination it can be observed that women find conflicts with passengers more stressful than men. All the results mentioned above are consistent with the research conducted so far by foreign authors.

Vplyv neurokognitivo treningu na výkon hokejových brankárov / The effect of neurocognitive training on the performance of hockey goalies

Supervisor: prof. MUDr. Jakub Otáhal, Ph.D.

Abstract

Hockey goalies are held to a high standard of performance, as they are often the deciding factor in the success or failure of a team. Physical and conditioning training are now approaching near perfection and therefore, there is a need to concentrate on other factors affecting goalie performance. Sight, hearing, spatial orientation, quick assessment of the game situation, anticipation or mental resilience are important factors, but they are not specifically developed by conventional goalkeeper training. In my thesis I focus on neurocognitive training and its use in the training of hockey goalies.

The aim of the work was to investigate how neurocognitive training affects their performance. The sub-tasks were content analysis of available literature sources and scientific studies dealing with this issue, designing a movement intervention design that respects the training process of ice hockey, creating a questionnaire dealing with neurocognitive training in ice hockey and through it finding out the knowledge of the issue in the ice hockey environment. Based on this, testing methods were proposed that would be applicable in ice hockey. The research investigation took the form of a quasi-experiment. The test methods were based on visual and auditory stimuli combined with spatial orientation and attention. The movement intervention was based on the same principles as the test methods. A learning curve was followed in it. Based on the results obtained, an effect was found for movement activities that required a change of direction. Negligible progress was noted for attention. A positive learning curve was found in the movement intervention. The questionnaire investigation indicated a lack of knowledge about neurocognitive training. The results of the thesis clearly confirmed that neurocognitive training can positively influence hockey goalie performance, especially spatial orientation and anticipation based on visual and acoustic stimuli.
